25 years of DESTRUCTION. That means 25 years of classic German thrash metal. 25 years of intelligent lyrics beyond all clichés. 25 years on the road playing for enthusiastic audiences all around the globe. 25 years in the premier division of extreme music. This anniversary calls for a very special present, which DESTRUCTION deliver to their fans and to themselves in the shape of their tenth studio album: “D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.”

“D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.” offers all those characteristic trademarks that have made DESTRUCTION so popular in the Metal scene for a quarter of a century. Listen to the razor sharp guitar-riffing often speeding ahead, but capable of reducing its velocity and allowing for crunchy or emotional passages at exactly the perfect moments for a break. Despite their blasting energy these Germans have always had a special talent for strong melodies and creating thrashing anthems that are embedding themselves in the musical memory. "With our anniversary coming up we wanted to have our very best elements from all those years gathered on this album", confirms singer Schmier. At the same time it would be very strange for DESTRUCTION to just revel in simple nostalgia.

Indeed “D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.” comes with a fresh new sound that pushes the band forward to unknown limits and firmly sets them into the new millennium of hard music. Whoever thought these Germans to be stuck in a conservative role as one of the leading figures among the three classics of Teutonic thrash together with their fellows from Sodom and Kreator has to see DESTRUCTION in a new light now: “D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.” appears more massive, hard-hitting and grinding than all of their renowned previous works without betraying their roots for just one second. The band combines its acquired perfection and refined song-writing skills with a surprisingly youthful approach that few would have expected coming from theses veterans.

"We cannot stand still, but have to move on in order to satisfy the demands of our own artistic ambitions", adds Schmier. "This step had to be taken as in 2008 it is impossible to re-create the rumbling of the eighties. Now there has to be technical prowess, tightness and an attention to detail." With the support of their new producer Jacob Hansen this is exactly what DESTRUCTION have achieved on “D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.” that also hosts a score of guest-appearances for the icing on this birthday cake. Famous guitar-heroes like Vinnie Moore (UFO) on "Devolution" or Jeff Waters (Annihilator) on "Urge (the Greed of Gain)" have flocked to contribute their stunning solos those songs. This proves to show that DESTRUCTION have made an impact on musicians far beyond the borders of Germany.

It would not be overstating the bands role to call them ambassadors of German culture. At this year's prestigious Inferno Festival in Norway DESTRUCTION were enthusiastically celebrated by a full house as headliners, where in many previous years others have failed to gather a large audience on the last night of this event. The same happens in the USA, Southern America, Asia and even Israel, where DESTRUCTION went as one of the first German bands playing guitar oriented music. One of the reasons for the band's acceptance and regard all over the world derives from Schmier's particular lyrical style. 'We get a lot of mail from countries, where people are suffering from dictatorial political or religious regimes', claims the singer. 'Our fans there understand our messages as we rattle at the very foundations of those regimes.'

DESTRUCTION move away from the pure fantasy their first EP "Sentence Of Death" (1984) very quickly that featured telling titles like "Black Mass", "Mad Butcher" or "Satan's Vengeance". “We rather combined anti-clerical content with profound criticism on a social and political level'”, explains Schmier. “In this we never saw us in a preaching role, but simply described our own experiences and the situation surrounding us”. On their second full length "Eternal Devastation" (1986) the popular songs about hell had been replaced by more specific themes like the generally anti-religious "Curse The Gods" and which other band of that era could claim a song like "Life Without Sense" written out of the perspective of a severely handicapped child?

“D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.” maintains and expands this high lyrical standard by a combining theme running through all songs: The devolution of mankind with ethic and educational levels of societies sinking all around the globe. This gloomy and pessimistic outlook on the state of man fits perfectly to the hard hitting and harsh new songs on the new album. And as always there is a glimmer of hope somewhere on the horizon as DESTRUCTION refrain from simplistic navel gazing or trying to press an opinion on people. Hopefully the Germans have another 25 years of their steep and successful career ahead, which should be easily achieved as long as the keep releasing brilliant and renewing albums like “D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N”: Welcome to DESTRUCTION's big birthday party, welcome to a mighty kick in the ass!
