Pünktlich zum 20jährigen Band-Jubiläum begaben sich SOiL Anfang 2017 ins Studio um neues Material für “SCREAM: The Essentials” aufzunehmen. Dieses Greatest Hits Album enthält sowohl die Songs, die SOiL als Band repräsentieren und berühmt gemacht haben, als auch neue Versionen bekannter Songs und bisher unveröffentlichtes Material.
Der Track "Gimme Some Lovin“, welcher erstmalig im 80er Jahre Kultfilm „The Blues Brothers“ auftauchte, ist eine Cover Version. Bassist Tim King dazu: „"We felt it was a perfect song to add the album. It tied in our Chicago roots and the 20th anniversary of the band perfectly". Sänger Ryan McCombs ergänzt: "Vocally, I really had a good time with the song. It was a bit left field to what I’m accustomed to singing, but with the added touches we put on it, the song fell right into place."
Auf “SCREAM: The Essentials” findet sich unter anderem auch eine Akustik Version von "Can You Heal Me" vom Album "Re.de.fine", die in Dimebag Darrells Home Studio aufgenommen und von Vinnie Paul produziert wurde. "Those sessions are such a blur, as it was mandatory to record while drinking lots of booze at Dime’s studio," sagt Tim King. "But somehow we got through them. Great times and memories (from what we can still recall!) came from that session. A lot of drunken love on those tracks."
Weitere Highlights sind sicherlich auch die neue Version von "Give It Up", auf der Wayne Static von Static-X zu hören ist, sowie eine Homage an den kürzlich verstorbenen Chris Cornell, dem SOiL mit ihrer ganz eigenen Version des Soundgarden Klassikers "Rusty Cage" ihre Ehre erweisen.
